Merit Increases

As you are aware the mayor did propose the 5% merit increases in his budget to the council, the council will still have to vote on the final budget. I feel very confident the council will leave the merits in the budget.

Birmingham Police Dept. marks anniversary in slaying of three officers

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Birmingham police radios went quiet for 15 seconds this morning in memory of three officers gunned down in the line of duty seven years ago today.

West Precinct Officers Carlos Owen, Robert Bennett and Harley Chisholm died in a hail of gunfire June 17, 2004, at an Ensley drug house. Officer Michael Collins was wounded, but survived the attack.

Kerry Spencer fired the shots that killed Owen, Bennett and Chisholm. He, along with co-defendant Nathaniel Woods, were convicted and sentenced to death. They remain on Death Row at Alabama's Holman Prison.

All police buildings today are flying flags at half-staff and the police radios were held silent for 15 seconds at 11 a.m. in remembrance of their ultimate sacrifice.

"When June 17 rolls around every year, everybody thinks about it," said David Crews, president of Birmingham's Fraternal Order of Police.

Many of today's current officers and employees never had the chance to know the three slain officers, Crews said.

"I feel it is very important that we not only remember this date, but also the officers and their families," Crews said. "It was a sad, tragic day in law enforcement history for us. It's one of those things you will never forget."

5 Officers Reinstated

Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #1 Members:

It is with great happiness that we announce to our members that on April 12, 2011, the three board panel with the Jefferson County Personnel reinstated our five brother officers that were fired just short of two years ago. The Personnel Board Hearing Officer previously recommended the Officers be immediately reinstated and that ruling was unanimously upheld today by the full Personnel Board. These officers have been through a lot over the past two years fighting for justice and their jobs back and we applaud their courage. Please continue to keep them in your prayers as they move back forward in their careers.

Also, after several meetings with the Mayors Association concerning the nineteen (19) step pay scale. The Mayors Association has removed the proposal from consideration from the Personnel Board agenda. We are still working with the members of this Association to come to an amicable compromise or to keep in place the current pay scale. We will continue to keep our members apprised of any changes or updates to this proposal please check the FOP website.

Thank you for your support.

David Crews, FOP President
